Volt Family Story: Gettysburg
How Volt helped Coach Shaun Weaver administer sport-specific training to over 400 athletes at Gettysburg.
Since joining the department in 2005, Shaun Weaver has filled a substantial role in Gettysburg College athletics. Officially, he is the football team’s defensive coordinator. On top of that, he has stepped into roles as defensive line coach, football recruiter, and strength and conditioning coordinator for the entire athletic department. Needless to say, his plate was full. Seeking a solution to ensure all 400-plus athletes at Gettysburg College received individualized, sport-specific training, Coach Weaver turned to Volt Athletics.
“I trained multiple types of sports, male and female, a whole variety,” he notes. “There was a lot of coordination but not enough time. I worked with the whole athletic student body and my priority, especially during football season, is the football program. I spent a lot of time on other programs, but I only had so many hours in a day, so it was hard for me to give them exactly what they needed.”
Before the 2013 season, he began utilizing Volt Athletics to help administer strength and conditioning plans for the entire athletic department. Doing so allowed him to better manage his various roles at the school. It also gave all sports programs access to a sport-specific, professionally-designed platform for strength training.
Two years later, still working with Volt, Weaver recognizes positive results across the entire department. “The main thing was finding the best possible training options for every sport we have without hiring full-time strength coaches,” he says. This was important for Gettysburg, since the strength staff are all coaches as their primary duty. Volt’s 12 month training calendar, comprised of 3 phases broken down into smaller blocks, focuses on the long-term development necessary to build successful athletes.
Weaver appreciates how Volt has added consistency to Gettysburg’s programs. As he notes, “Each program before Volt was a strength program with an in-season and off-season, as well as winter and summer phases. All sports had 2 days per week of strength training during the season, and 4 days a week in the off-season. Each program had numerous differences in each phase of lifting, and was not online based,” says Weaver.
“We wanted to get the best possible training for all athletes - male and female. Because I spend the majority of my time with football, I didn’t get the time to be the best strength coach possible. But with Volt I can be the best at both positions.”
Though not directly orchestrating the workouts, Weaver can still monitor athletes’ activity in season. “Being able to pull up each player’s individual profile and look up by position is important for me as a football coach, and it’s huge to be able to track progress for an athlete in any sport,” he says. Volt’s programs are calibrated to the strength levels of each individual athlete and utilize sport-specific movement patterns, so Weaver no longer spends excessive time drawing up workouts. He simply gets athletes started on the program and then assists as needed throughout the strength development process.
With Volt adding structure to the strength programs, Weaver is freed up to focus on the football program. “We wanted to get the best possible training for all athletes - male and female. Because I spend the majority of my time with football, I didn’t get the time to be the best strength coach possible. But with Volt I can be the best at both positions.”
Coach Weaver is living the Gettysburg motto “Do Great Work” to its fullest potential. With Volt’s innovative platform, he is maximizing athletic potential in the weight room and on the playing field across the athletic department. He still wears many hats at Gettysburg, but now he can guarantee student-athletes department wide are receiving elite-level strength training.
Volt has helped Coach Weaver focus on his primary role as Defensive Coordinator while at the same time administering training to the whole department.
